Chapter 2: Tailey’s plan
[[Rothiemurchus Forest, Scotland - year 1953]]
– So… you’re lost, Tailey? – Sabrine asked.
– Yeah… but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you didn’t catch me.
– That’s true, I didn’t catch you – said Sabrine, standing up and looking at the trap where Tailey had been trapped. – And I don’t have anything to take to my boss either…
A look of dismay crossed Tailey’s eyes upon hearing the hunter’s last words.
– Did your boss force you to come here?
– Uh… yeah, sort of. The thing is, I need to catch a dragon.
– I understand… – said Tailey. Then she looked thoughtful for a moment. – I think I could fix that…
Sabrine raised an eyebrow, intrigued. Was this dragon about to help her?
– There’s a dragon – Tailey began to explain – that’s been eating my father’s flowers these past few weeks. It’s a rather mischievous and rare dragon to find. If you want, I can help you capture him so you can take him to your boss.
Sabrine rubbed her eyes in surprise. She could hardly believe that Tailey was actually helping her.
– A-are you serious? – Sabrine asked in disbelief.
– Of course I am! You have helped me, and as they say: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”
Sabrine giggled.
– I don’t think it works exactly like that, but any help is welcome.
– I’m glad to hear that! – the dragon exclaimed, before flying through the forest looking for some specific flowers. The hunter watched her curiously. When Tailey came back with a few flowers, she asked Sabrine to step on them.
– Why do you want me to step on them? – the hunter asked.
– Just do it, I’ll explain later.
Sabrine shrugged and stomped on the flowers.
– Alright! Now, let’s hide in that hedge.
The hunter was a little confused but hid in the hedge with the dragon.
– Now I can tell you what we are doing.
– Please tell me – Sabrine said, impatient and curious.
– I’ll be there – Tailey said with a giggle. – This dragon is a herbivore and loves flowers. These particular flowers give off a very strong smell when you step on them. That way, they will serve as bait so you can capture the dragon.
Sabrine’s mouth dropped open at her kindness. Still, she quickly pulled herself together and nodded, preparing a cloth trap to catch the dragon. When Tailey saw the trap, she flinched and looked away. The hunter noticed this.
– Is something wrong, Tailey?
– I might have some kind of trauma with those traps…
– Oh, I understand… if you want I can use something else.
– No, it’s not necessary. Use whatever you want – the dragon replied with a smile. Then, their conversation was interrupted by a tinkling sound in the forest. Both of their attentions were drawn to a small purple dragon, who had smelled the flowers and was eating them. Sabrine sneaked up to the dragon and, with a quick movement, caught it with one hand and tried to put it in the trap.
– One thing, be careful it doesn’t bite you.
– Pfft, I’m sure its bites can’t get me! – Right after saying that, the dragon sank its teeth into the skin of Sabrine’s hand. The latter let out a high-pitched little cry.
– Ouch, you’re really a bad boy. – said the hunter, while Tailey laughed at the situation. Sabrine finally managed to get the dragon into the cloth trap. The way the dragon thrashed around, struggling to free itself, made a look of guilt cross Sabrine’s face.
– Well, now you have something to give to your boss! – said Tailey with satisfaction.
– Yeah… I have something to give to my boss now… – said Sabrine without that satisfaction, watching the “bad boy” thrashing around in the trap.
